On my second day of hiking I was suppose to take the Dutchman and Coffee Trail to Red Tanks and Whiskey spring Trails returning on the Dutchman. Due to the fact it was suppose to be in the upper 80's I really didn't think it was wise to try a 19 mile loop hike so I opted for something a lot wimpier, the Lost Goldmine Trail West from the Broadway Trail Head to Cloudview Road. If the Lost Goldmine Trail East was a little uneventful then this is is even more so. The trail starts off at the Broadway Trail Head on the Jacob's Trail and after .7 miles comes to the start of the Lost Goldmine Trail. The lost Goldmine trail to Cloudview road spends the first half of the 3 mile trail going gradually up about 300 feet with lots of little switch backs not more than 30 feet in length (some were less than 10 feet). These become rather irritating after a while. Not that this gradual climb needs switchbacks, probably there to keep the trail from becoming a wash like the remnants of the old trail that headed straight up has become. There is some excitement just before you peak out on the trail as you cross Hog Canyon Wash, but it is short lived, maybe a minute or so. Once at the peak you do the same thing except this time down hill to Cloudview road. This hike was not as bad as I made it sound, the views from the west of Superstition Ridge were good especially at sunrise. On the return trip at the peak of the trail I saw a gate that had a trail heading up Hog Canyon. I did not feel I had walked enough so I thought I would check it out. Not sure where it was going but it appears to head up Hog Canyon. I went in about a half mile never really sure if I was on the trail or not but every once in a while I would see a rock cairn. The rock cairns look like they were randomly placed in a general up canyon direction but you really had to use your imagination to see a trail. This is a good route to polish up on your route finding skills. It would help though if I knew what the destination was (probably Superstition Ridge).
