Couple more trails I wanted to get in before the Superstition Season comes to a close. This hike was a loop consisting of the Terrapin and Middle Dutchman Trail from the Peralta Trail Head. I am really getting to dislike the Bluff Spring Trail but it appears it is the trail to take to get to many of the other trails. Good thing about it though is it gets the day started with a good 20 minute climb that acts like that first cup of coffee in the morning, Gets all the systems up and running. Took the left turn on the Terrapin and headed toward the Dutchman Trail. This is the first time I went on this trail in this direction. Fairly easy walking on this trail in this direction and the good part is the last portion is downhill this time. That uphill climb on the Terrapin when heading south on it is steep but luckily it is only 15 minutes long. By the time I reached the Dutchman trail it was heading toward 90 degrees, luckily there was a very thin cloud cover that kept the sun from beaming down hard on you. Still could get a good sunburn from it though.
This portion of the Dutchman to Bluff Springs is new territory for me, with the exception of the short section between the Cavalry Trail and Bull Pass. Trail was in good condition the whole way, No water in creeks except at Charlebois Spring. Good pool there. I filled up my canteen with the cool water. Also saw a turtle in the pool that seemed to be enjoying his little 100 square feet of paradise. Didn’t see it but was told LaBarge Spring and creek had water. Also saw my first snake of the year, startled me at first until I noticed it was just a gopher snake. It was spread out across the trail but moved off while I was taking its picture, seemed camera shy, must have been having a bad hair day.
First people I encountered were at Charlebois Spring, about 6 people camping. Two more groups of 3 were encountered close to LaBarge Spring. All were overnighters. The rest of the hike to Bluff Spring Trail and on down to Peralta Trail Head were uneventful. I did run into an individual that was doing work on the Terrapin Trail. We both came to the Terrapin Bluff spring trail junction at the same time, there was almost an accident as we entered the junction. I mentioned to him that they might want to install a traffic light at this intersection.
This is a nice loop trail, would be really nice when the LaBarge Creek has water and the temperatures are a little less hot. Going in the direction I went seems to be a good way to do this trail, other than the first part of the Bluff Spring Trail there aren’t any steep climbs. Next week is supposed to be cooler so I might do one more excursion to the Supes before I head on to greener (cooler) pastures until next year.
