| no partners | | I decided to check out a couple of areas of interest along FR203A on my way home from a six day camping trip to the Sierra Ancha near Bull Canyon. The first stop was the trail head for the Nordhoff-Hope Cliff Dwelling just off FR203A near an old corral. The ruin locating map I had extracted from some charts in Lange's "Echoes in the Canyon" showed an archaeological site on the rim of Coon Creek Canyon not far from the Nordhoff-Hope TH. The mark on the map categorized this location as "other" for the type of archaeology site. In the past I have found these "other" locations can be artifact scatters, petroglyphs and in some cases ruins than don't fit the category of Compound, Pueblo, or Cliff Dwelling. This would be the fourth location from this map that I had checked over the last few days. So far my success rate was zero finds for the previous three locations.
The search led me out onto a point overlooking Coon Creek Canyon and also a great view of the NH Cliff Dwelling only about 220 yds to the north. After taking some photos of that cliff dwelling I continued the search for the mystery "other" archaeology site on my map with no luck. Over the last several years of using this map I've only been successful at finding anything of archaeological significance at about 25% of these "other" sites but two of those were fairly significant ruins, so I keep trying.
