| no partners | | Headed up to Lockett Meadow for 4 nights/5 days of car camping and hiking to escape the early heat wave in Phoenix. I usually prefer locations with more solitude but I always meet interesting people at Lockett Meadow. FR552 up to Lockett Meadow is in fairly good shape - some washboards and a few potential issues for low clearance vehicles which can be avoided by driving around them. I arrived around noon on Monday and had my pick of campsites so chose #1 because it's the furthest off the campground loop road. The CG is open for fee collection and I met the retired couple who work part time for the contract company that takes care of the campsite. They were posting stage 2 fire posters (no campfires, etc) and stretching yellow tape across the fire pits.
I had hoped to get some photos of snow covered peaks but there wasn't much snow left. Needing something to while away the afternoon while getting acclimated to the altitude, I decided to do this loop hike. It was a good choice with views to the south of the area along HW89 and views to the north and west of the Inner Basin. Most of the Aspens only had a hint of leaves starting to form but there were a few isolated small patches of green on the slopes. The meadows are still yellow with dried up grass left over from last season. |
