All the springs and tanks were dry but the topography and sat photos of the nearby Fish Creek looked promising so that’s where we headed.
Along the way we walked though a gem of aspen groves, dense spruce and all sorts of other untouched High Country veg.
I couldn’t believe we were walking on forest roads on Memorial Day Weekend and the only people we saw were two ladies on horseback who mysteriously disappeared.
We arrived at a dry and lava rock filled Fish Creek but luckily we packed a multitude of carefully crafted beverages that kept our nourishment levels up for the walk back.
Every time we came across a wide meadow I busted out the binos that were strapped to my chest to scan for sheds and other goodies and ended up glassing up the remains of an old cow.
But the best part of the entire hike was when I looked into the face of a Mexican Grey Wolf!
I never want to be the guy that “Cries Wolf” but I’m 98% it was a Mexican Grey, as I clearly watched it for 30 seconds behind the pair of $400 Vortex hunting binoculars from no more than 100 yards away.
The moment was something I’ll never forget and all the guys were there to watch it and I believe Pat got a chance to see it behind the binos before it ran into the woods.
After we made it back to camp and ate we all drove up to Greens Peak for a windy but 360° scenic sunset to cap off a great day in the White Mountains.
