Woke up in Green Valley - or maybe Sahuarita, who knows? - this morning and decided to bag the contemplated Bog/Kent Springs Loop hike in favor of Patagonia birding.
Took a fun, scenic route from the I19 to Ruby Road and S. River Road, to the 82 into Patagonia. Passed by the turnoff to Patagonia Lake State Park - thought I might return to bird there after first hitting Paton's.
All I can say about Tucson Audubon's Paton Center For Hummingbirds is WOW! My long anticipated first visit did not disappoint! Trust me, even if you are not "into" birds, this place is worth a stop if you're in Patagonia.
There must have been at least a hundred hummingbirds of 5 or 6 different species, as well as many, many other birds, butterflies, caterpillars, lizards, squirrels, and deer.
My target life birds for this visit - the reason I choose Patagonia for the day - were the Violet-crowned Hummingbird and the Yellow-billed Cuckoo. No Cuckoos were in evidence, but the unique beauty of the Violet-crowned more than made up for it! :y:
The very colorful Broad-billed Hummers were fun to watch, but each time the Violet came into view he made me catch my breath - that may be my favorite new bird of the year!
Hiked the Nature Conservancy Trail for a while from Paton's, then drove the rest of the way to the Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve and hiked around there a bit. Saw my first Cassin's Kingbird there.
The Patagonia area is incredibly lush and green right now. I could totally live there.
Driving between Sonoita and Elgin on the way home, I got a good look at a gorgeous herd of 10 or 12 Pronghorns off the road - unfortunately there was no place to pull over so I still don't have any good photos of Pronghorns.
