The trailhead was busy; lots of people were out and about enjoying the winter weather. We parked in the overflow area and hit the trail. We were late getting to the trailhead (~10:15 am) and we told the rest of the group to get started without us. We hiked fast but didn't see them until we Reached Tom's Thumb despite our quick 3 mph hiking speed. A 30 minute head start is hard to overcome!
There was quite a bit of greenery and blooming flowers in several sections.
There were also several groups rock climbing today. The hawks that nested on the Thumb last year must have chosen a different nesting site this season because it was no longer off limits and the rock climbers were making up for lost time.
On the hike back down we did a bit of exploring. We looked for Ogre's Den and did find a cave of sorts but it was fairly inaccessible and did not have the wall painting.
Further down we stopped by Miner's Cave. It looks like people are adding some of the mining paraphernalia that was previously removed. There was an oil lamp and some irrigation piping but no log book as of yet.
It was a fun hike as usual. I took down some possible gps coordinates for Ogre's Den and Indian Cave. Next time I am here I will have to do some more exploring! |
