This section of the Alps straddles the Austrian/Bavarian border. We spent two and a half days exploring the interior of the park, staying at backcountry huts, and attempting a summit. Some poor weather and lingering snow/ice prevented us from completing the original plan, but we still had an amazing trek in the alps with alpine lakes, waterfalls, and stunning views.
We began our hike at Wimbach Klamm. There is a thousand meter long board walk along the side of a gorge that is lined with small water falls. Following this river upstream, we arrived one of many mountain passes that took as high above treeline. We spent the first night at Ingolstadter, on the Austrian side of the border. We attempted to summit the Funtenseetauren, one of the highest peaks in Germany. Unfortunately, due to a thunderstorm, we decided against pursuing the summit while we were about 1/3 of the way there. Our attempted backup route was also foiled due to several steep and unsafe snowfields (no micro-spikes on this trip). Finally, we returned to Funtensee and were lucky enough to get the last two beds at the Karlingerhaus. The next day, we were able to keep most of our plan by hiking down to Konigssee to catch the ferry back to the village where our car was parked. Because we weren't able to go over or around the highest peaks, we missed our planned route to Obersee, which is a beautiful spot on east side of Berchtesgaden.
Overall, this was an incredible trek and well-worth the effort. We finished our last day of hiking with beer and bretzels in Munchen |
