| no partners | | Needed a short hike to start breaking in my new pair of hiking boots. Cool temps this morning were perfect at our 5:45am start. We did a nice loop in the Cave Creek Recreation Area and partly on State Trust Land. starting from the east trailhead at Surrey Hills and finishing at the south trailhead of the P.A. Seitts Preserve with a lollipop in the middle. We used the Slate, Quartz, and Military Trails. Route is posted in the photoset. My friend and golfing buddy Kevin came up to join us before he leaves for Spain to hike the Camino de Santiago next week.
Fifteen minutes into the hike a light rain started. Nothing too bothersome and it wasn't too long before the ground and creosote got wet enough for that lovely scent of petrichor. Tip of the hat to @Tortoise_Hiker for adding that noun to my vocabulary. The rain and clouds gave everything a very surreal appearance and we had the whole place to ourselves. What a treat! Near the end we saw one mountain biker and then two girls with dogs that actually said hello back to us. Surprise, surprise.
With a quarter mile to go to reach the car the sky opened up and the rain began in earnest. I had no idea that I possessed that sort of speed. The really amazing thing is that The Weather Channel App just two hours prior predicted NO chance of rain. I've never seen them get a forecast wrong before.  |
