We expected more people down in this popular area, but we had the campground to ourselves. As it was getting dark at camp we were treated to the sounds of a group of Whip-poor-wills and owls that were literally overhead! It was pretty amazing. In all my times out, I had never experienced so many that close to where I was sitting.
In the morning we went to the Portal Peak Lodge, Store, and Cafe for breakfast, followed by a little stroll around town. Back at camp, Jim and I packed up and headed home to Tucson, while the rest of the group went for a birding hike in South Fork.
As an added bonus, I got to briefly make it into New Mexico for the first time this year, as we drove in via Road Forks and Rodeo. I drove back out via the direct route to San Simon. Fun time! |
