| no partners | | I had the morning off so I decided to do a little quickie before work. I had before done the Elden Lookout Trail that spurs Fatman's Loop, but never done the loop itself. I was by myself so had the chance to take about 50 photos. Fatman's Loop scales one of the lobes of Mount Elden, a lava dome volcano adjacent to Flagstaff's east side. There are tons of dacite lava rock formations, such as the one that forms Fatman's Gap, but I find them all fascinating. Fatman's Loop tops out with 600 ft of elevation gain from the trail head, but after just about a mile of hiking. So its pretty steep but after just a short bit of huffing it you get a decent view to the east and south. To the south is the Continental Country Club neighborhood of Flagstaff with an expanse of ponderosa pine forest out to the horizon. Looking east is the best view with cinder cone volcanoes popping up as far as the eye can see. The vegetation is quite interesting with a variety of cactus, pinion, and juniper trees. |
