| no partners | | I had originally planned to do an out and back on the Bear Jaw trail this morning but a dark cloud covered the Peaks all morning, so I decided to check out Slate Mountain instead. Yet another dark cloud loomed above Slate Mountain as well, but I figured I had time before it blew up on me. I actually saw a nice variety of wildflowers today, though I was not impressed with the crappy health of the pinion/ponderosa forest that blankets the hillside. Slate mountain actually has some interesting laccolith-like geology, very similar to the eastern flank of Elden by the Heart Trail. Near the top I saw tons of Redwall Limestone that got throw vertically when this thing popped out of the earth. By the time I reached the summit, it was sprinkling and I was getting some decent photos of rain pouring down in sheets on the nearby meadows. I knew I was about to get caught up in a nasty monsoon so I started jogging down the trail until the rain came down harder and I had to break out my emergency rain poncho (best dollar I ever spent). I had to take shelter under some pinions as thunder cracked around me. The rest of the way was muddy and I was basically sprinting from tree to tree as the lighting scared the bajesus out of me. The view from the top was decent but it getting caught up in a thunderstorm wasn't really worth it. |
