As I write this in February from my desk in Queens NYC, cold and an increasing cover of snow, rule the Eastern New York mountains. Not absolute impediments to hiking them. But more than I desire, or am properly equipped/experienced to undertake.

But I do need to get out. So I present here (in a corresponding photoset) photos from winter visits to four local, nearby parks – Oakland Lake, Cross Island, Little Bay and Crocheron. Certainly these parks lack majestic mountains, or soaring peaks, or spectacular canyons. But they do provide pleasant, subtlety scenic, quiet (in winter) respites from the urban cacophony. And while not containing mountains, peaks or canyons, all four provide a water feature, either a pond, small lake or bay.

These four do sit in urban settings . Oakland Lake rests across from a large apartment complex; Cross Island sits right in the middle of the tentacles of a major highway interchange; Little Bay run right under the Throgs Neck Bridge; and Crocheron abuts a major parkway. But each still manages a separation from these city artifacts sufficient to feel one has left the urban terrain and entered a nature preserve. So to visit these parks gains one a quiet enclosure, so it was me and nature, with the winter cold and wind depressing the crowds. Nothing wrong with crowds, which grow in other seasons, still a pleasant ambience but a different, more busy, boisterous, sort. But in winter, quiet.

More winter visits planned, as I need always to get out, and as a good number of entries still remain on my list of nature niches in this area of Queens.
