But this trip also had a more atypical task, graffiti removal. Youthful exuberance can be admired, as can be youthful artistry, but not when the combination produces brightly colored (though creatively clever) graffiti on the Appalachian Trail. So using a product called “Elephant Snot” (for real, look it up, biodegradable) and hauling water in on backpack and using a good bit of scrubbing effort with a large brush, the graffiti was removed. Ardent hikers in their quest to traverse the entire length of the AT would prefer their effort and accomplishment to be free from graffiti.
In any event, fall had arrived, bringing autumn colors, so while trudging along with water, Elephant Snot, and brushes, plus tools to trim and cut bushes and trees, I brought a camera. Not many pictures here of grand vistas; these New York mountain trails provide long looks only at occasional spots where the topology creates a high ridge or forest opening with a break in the trees. But no mind. The thick forest cover creates a peaceful ambiance, and the resulting soft shade keeps the temperature moderate, and of course the changing autumn leaves creates a kaleidoscope of color. |
