I haven’t been here for over 10 years and it was time to go back and see this beautiful place. It was so secret long ago but now there are literally YouTube videos on how to get here.
We had a slow start Saturday and made our way through the bumpy road that seems to be made of basketball sized volcanic rock. We reached the camp at about 3 pm and to my surprise we saw seven vehicles and three 4 wheelers.
We setup camp and made our way down the scree hill of death.
I was wearing my Chacos, after all we were just going to hike upstream a little bit and explore. BAD choice! The tiny marbles took me out once on the way down (agave) and once in the creek (goose egg on elbow). I wore my Salomon shoes with wool socks the next day and they were much better! We came back and camped. The people that camped the night before us had a fire (illegally) and didn’t put it out! :x We put it out and cleaned up the abused little ring for next time.
After eating a delicious breakfast of sausage, eggs and grits, we headed down the marble death scree trail, again.
We did the first shallow narrow and came to the long swim. The water is COLD right now so I was so happy I had my wetsuit top. Cory does well in the cold bit was covered in goosebumps the whole day. We inflated our floatation devices. :D We stopped several times and warmed up in the sun. We passed the “backpackers” on their way out so we had the falls to ourselves for a bit.
Inside the overhang was SO COLD! My smile is huge due to my chattering teeth! Mid June is probably a more ideal time to visit.
It was really neat to come back here, I haven’t seen Joe in years but I am so thankful for all of the neat places he took me! :rollH:
I picked up some trash and tried to pretend this was still the secret place we had visited long ago. Then we hiked out and started the arduous drive out.
Note: I brought my dog but made sure to pick up after any waste. She is an amazing swimmer, but I kept her in her life vest because the swims are so long and cold. Also, Sophie is not a normal dog; she has many skills including rappelling in my backpack. I don’t this is this is a dog friendly hike. Sophie is an amazing dog she goes everywhere with me.

I am now attempting to navigate, post, reply (etc..) this site with only an iPhone… Wish me luck!
