The two previous annual trips were rappelling via Meadow Canyon. This year the game plan was to take the non-technical approach previously routed by Joe Bartels. Studied the USGS and Google Earth for an approach. We ended up to far west and into a draw that required a series of detours with hoisting packs and canines. It was a very hot day. 3 Dudes, one very tough female and 2 dogs. For the German Shepard it was her first trip of this kind and was scared much of the way. My 4 legged hike partner, it was old hat for him, and he complied with requests and led where able to. He was in dog heaven. Tyson rocks.

Almost 4 hours to the gardens. The jump off the vine was most refreshing. Happy to see others found our kitchen cache and thank you for the can of Jalapeno Spam. We brought too much perishable food but will savor the Spam for next years journey. We had been talking for years about how to conquer camp fire pizza and pulled it off. We made 5 pies. They came out glorious.

Previous two years we had afternoon thunder showers. This year was just the thunder and lightening. Over night there was ample flooding and the pools were muddy in the morning.

Hike partner Mike was destined to use the alleged "secret trail" or mysterious Bartel route for the journey out. After the brutal and punishing descent, I was all four the swims out via White Box. Consensus no. Let the ascent begin. We followed I think game trails and got in 500' in AEG fairly quickly. Everyone was happy. Then all hell broke loose. We cliffed out a couple times with some serious bush whacking. It was yet another hot day. Taking lots of shady breaks for the canines with lots of water. Watched the cumulus's form to the northeast which rolled in and provided much needed shade. The bowl was its steepest on the upper canyon. We stumbled upon a routed trail about 80' in EG from the top which from this location was just under 1/2 mile from the car camp.

I'd like to try finding this mysterious express route once again in the fall or winter but for future August trips either rap in via Meadow with the swims for the return flight.
