This loop consists of two trails, the Creekfield Lake and hale Lake loop. Creekfield Lake is actually a paved .75 mile trail labeled as a nature trail with informative signs. We did see our largest alligator here at about 9 feet long. The hale lake loop is a 3 mile loop that follows along a failed loop of Big Creek. We were hiking this loop in late afternoon so the interesting part of this hike was what I called the vulture tree, a large oak tree where the vultures were congregating for the night, lots of them. This was kind of eerie to see this many vultures in a tree watching you, probably hoping you will croak. I kept thinking about the Gary Larson Cartoons where he quite frequently featured vultures. I was looking for the vulture with the grand piano ready to drop it on me if I didn't die naturally. This hike was a total of 4 miles and not as much wildlife as on the earlier hike near Elm Lake but still an interesting walk. The large oak and pecan trees with the Spanish Moss still fascinated me. |
