While at Deer Camp I took a side trip up a canyon to the north of deer camp that was formed as a result of one of the glide faults. These are faults formed as the sides of the mountain slid down toward the valley. These are quite common in basin Range topography but nowhere have I seen it more evident then along the south facing slopes of Tanque Verde Ridge. The walk back along the Ruiz Trail and Coyote Wash was really interesting and quite beautiful around sunset. The Ruiz trail geologically is interesting because the rocks of the Cambrian era are tilted up in this region. Escabrosa Limestone of the Mississippian era, Martin, Abrigo, Bolsa from the Cambrian era and even a bit of Bolsa Quartzite Arizona's basement rock from Pre Cambrian. We finished the hike just before it got totally dark. Saw a few people on the trail when we started then nobody once off the Hope Camp Trail. There were a fool pools of water still in the side canyon just above deer camp but the pools were getting kind of small. It is suppose to rain here this week so hopefully will replenish the tanks. |
