The first two miles are pretty bland- it's all uphill on an old roadbed through forest with no views (Grouse Vista Trailhead is far more popular as it's a shorter approach with less elevation gain). Right around 2 miles the trail finally breaks out of the trees and provides views of Silver Star and Pyramid Peak. Began to hit snow in this area, but didn't have to use microspikes until I joined with the main trail from Grouse Vista Trailhead.
Only 1 other group at the summit when I arrived. I had a snack and enjoyed the views. Then I headed off trail- heading due south from Silver Star and headed towards the Indian Pits. I dropped off the ridgeline a bit too soon, but easily corrected myself and found the snow covered trail I was looking for. The trail was pristine- no sign of tracks since the last snowfall, route finding wasn't too difficult and I made it to the Indian Pits without difficulty.
After a brief stop at the Indian Pits, I continued to drop south along the ridge until I eventually intersected trail #180 and headed back to the trailhead. |
