Headed out to Elk Lake trail via the Old Cascade Crest trail system. Went swimming in a couple of lakes and then lounged around until sunset. Mosquitoes were annoying when sitting still at camp, but with bug spray and treated clothing they didn't actually bite. Most appeared very small and would only just have hatched.
On trail at 0500 the next morning. Made my way back south on the PCT to Eunice Lake, then headed west along the Old Cascade Crest again to shorten my return hike. Mosquitoes were worse on day #2 and much larger, probably a combination of lower temps and dropping in elevation, but they started to swarm when I was moving and were not fully deterred by bugspray when I stopped. Still had fun, but will probably wait a couple weeks for the hatch to die off before returning to hike anything at this elevation level. |
