It's just a pullout where the trail crosses Summit Rd. I wanted to go west for several miles since I hadn't previously covered that route. The trail switches back uphill for about .5 miles. At .45 miles there's an old stone ramada. When you get to about .6 or .7 mile you get on the ridgeline and get great views of Phoenix and the surrounding area. Fortunately it was a clear day, little smog. Makes for good photo ops.
I followed the trail along the ridgeline. A little narrow in spots with drop-offs. Rocky, typical of other areas of the National Trail. At 1.5 miles there's an intersection with the Ranger Trail on the north side of the mountain. I kept going until the 2.6 mile mark and returned on the same route. Didn't run into anyone until about the 2.5 mile mark, then ran into a jogger on the way back. Then met about 8-10 people just starting out when I got back to the trailhead.
After a brief break I headed east on the National Trail toward the TV towers. Went about a mile, ran into no one. This side parallels Summit Rd. Shadier than the west side, at least in the morning. |
