Finished off the Gateway portion of the Maricopa Trail this morning. Two sections...Gateway Trailhead to Paradise Trail/Levee Trail junction, and Indian Bend Rd. to Royal Palm Rd. along the Indian Bend Wash. Started from Gateway TH at 7am, just before sunrise. The first mile was very nice, not as cool as previous mornings, very slight breeze. Trail led through saguaros and teddy bear chollas, slightly uphill most of the way. At the first mile, a 15-20 mph breeze picked up and cooled things slightly. Great views back toward Scottsdale and of Thompson Peak starting at about the 0.7 mark. Light to moderate traffic along the route. At about 1.2 miles is the junction to go to the Levee Trail. Walked to the Levee Trail where I'd left off previously and then back to the Gateway Trailhead at 8:30. A few quail and rabbits spotted but nothing exciting. :-)

(I didn't mention that I committed the cardinal sin of taking no water. I keep my H2O bottle with my pack, which I'd left behind in a senior moment this morning. Somehow I managed to bring a granola bar with me, though.)

Drove to Indian Bend/Hayden where I parked in the plaza on the SE corner as suggested by DarthStiller. (I'm always open to suggestions from those who are more knowledgeable.) Started at 9am sharp. The trail leads north along Hayden along the Indian Bend Wash trail/bike path until you get to McCormick Pkwy. Turn left and go a short distance until you reach the golf course, then follow the bike path along Lake Marguerite. Homes on one side, lake and several holes on the golf course on the other. Nothing terribly exciting in this stretch, other than walkers out for their morning exercise. It's 2 miles from Indian Bend/Hayden to the Butters restaurant at Hayden/Royal Palm. Return along the same route and finished at 10:20am.

Now I need to decide which section of the MT to attack. SE along the Mesa canal? Or something more interesting to the NE?
