| partners | | Up in Moab for a quick weekend. We had to meet some people in the morning so got a late start to the trailhead starting hiking just before 11am. Not ideal start with thunderstorms possible in the afternoon. However, at the start there were very few clouds forming. From the La Sal Pass trailhead there's only one way to go but 1/2 mile in there was a junction where we took the right fork. Left fork supposedly goes to Mount Tukuhnikivatz which some hikers do as double to Mount Peale. Today of course we only had time for one peak. After the fork it hits 4x4 road which we followed up hill to the end.
From there it was trail that's not always well defined but followable. We followed the trail into a drainage where it continues straight up towards the main ridgeline connecting Mount Peale summit. Approaching the ridgeline looks like hikers have taken several different paths. We left the drainage before it hit the ridgeline and then found somewhat defined trail once on the ridgeline. Straight forward ascent from this point on as the clouds started to gather. A light rain started to fall on the final 200 feet to the summit. Took a break in the light rain and some pics on the summit before it started raining harder and hailing. That was our queue to descend but fortunately no lightning at this point. We descended with rain and hail but it stopped after about 15 minutes. I lamented maybe we should have waited it out on the summit but at least we did make it.
We continued the descent roughly the same way we ascended. The clouds continued to build and first thunder and lighting but it was several miles away and we were off the exposed ridgeline. Took our time on the hike back down on the loose talus which is abundant on this hike. Once down in the tree line there are some really nice aspen stands near the trailhead. As we were just getting back to the vehicle rain started coming down so perfect timing. Fun hike and made us think this would be great in the fall with the aspens and more time to do some of the other peaks as a full day hike! |
