| partners | | Hiked an abbreviated version of Dome Mountain Loop. We cut out the west side of the loop and instead hiked Dome Mountain and the adjacent mountain also named Dome Mountain on the topo. Starting from the trailhead about 8 or so we headed in on the OHV road. The road gets a lot of OHV traffic with contributes to the negative impact on the area but once past that it's a really nice area. Hiking up the north east slope of Dome Mountain there is a very followable route/trail to the summit and by far the best part of the loop. On the topo there are two Dome Mountains marked but the first one is higher at 3381. After taking a break on the summit it still was not lunch time yet so we hiked over the other Dome Mountain which is marked 3269 on the topo.
Once on the other not Dome Mountain we took a lunch break and of the two summits not Dome has much better views so taking lunch on this summit was a good idea. After lunch we headed down to the saddle between the two Domes which unlike the route up to real Dome Mountain is off trail. From the saddle we hiked down the drainage which is also off trail back to one of the jeep trails below. Then it's just a cruise back to the trailhead except that going back I opted for cutting across the desert to avoid the OHV traffic which was now abundant in early afternoon. |
