| no partners | | This is a trail that makes use of many forest roads closed to motorized vehicle travel. Near some of the ridges/peaks you get a fairly good view of the towns of Showlow and Pinetop/Lakeside, but nothing really spectacular. Unfortunately when wet the trail is rather muddy - the sticky until you are walking in platform shoes - type of mud. 
I chose to include the #637a shortcut trail (with yellow dots in addition to the white diamond markers), but also got off trail a few times on some of the many forest roads and wildcat biking trails that cross this trail a few dozen times, with not all the intersections clearly marked. To be fair, the forest service has done a reasonable job at marking most of the trail intersections, but all the extra trails, roads, and some fallen trees mean you have to watch your GPS like a hawk lest you wander onto the wrong trail/road.
Unfortunately, of the 13 groups I encoutered, 7 of them were motorized OHV users illegally recreating on land closed to motorized use. ](https://hikearizona.com/dex2/images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif "Brick wall") I did notice that either the forest service has not placed signage, or the signage was vandalized/stolen, in many of the access routes.  There was one guy riding his ATV actually obeying the rules though (looked like he was giving rides to grandkids?) so perhaps there is still some small hope for humanity where at least a few adults are still able to act responsibly and be a good role model for kids.  |
