| no partners | | Today I decided to head up to Crown King and check out a couple of more fire lookouts: Towers Mountain and the Horsethief Lookout
Towers Mountain
This one is about 5 miles from the Crown King General Store. I drove up the Towers Mountain Road for about 3 miles, parked, and then hiked up to the Lookout: I could have driven all the way to the tower, but I wanted to stretch my legs a bit and make a somewhat legitimate hike out of it. I think that you'd want a high clearance 4WD vehicle to go up past the General Store.
Nobody was home at the lookout, and there was no trap door in place, so I was able to climb up in the cab -- nice views!
Horsethief Lookout
This one is only 10 miles from Crown King, but it took about an hour to get there on the crappy road. I drove around to the service road for the tower, and made the short hike up to the tower. Someone was manning the tower today, and there were signs asking people not to climb up into the tower. Therefore, I only climbed up 3 of the 4 flights of stairs, and stopped at the landing for the last flight of stairs to check out the views and take some pics.
Synopsis
I enjoyed both lookouts, but it is a loooong drive to get to the Horsethief LO.
Mileage and elevation gain for the 2 hikes are below. Stats above are the sum of the two.
Towers Mountain: 4.2 miles with an AEG of 833 feet
Horsethief: 1.2 miles with an AEG of 394 feet |

Wildflowers Observation Light There were a few wildflowers along the road up to Towers Mountain; however, I didn't see many flowers going up to the Horsethief LO. |
