|I decided to head up to the Mogollon Rim today and bag a couple of AZ Fire Lookout sites: Chevelon Butte and the O'Haco LO|
This one was a pretty cool little hike, and there was some interesting stuff to see.
To be legal, I followed the excellent instructions that @chumley provided and got a permit to access the area.
I could have driven up the road farther than I did, but I decided to make a more legitimate hike out of it.
Once up on the butte, I did a bit of minor rock scrambling and checked out the East Chevelon BM. I found the benchmark and one reference mark, and also checked out some rock wall ruins.
After descending the East Chevelon BM I headed toward the remnants of the old fire lookout, and stopped by the O'Haco gravesite and the benchmark along the way.
In doing my best @FLYING_FLIVER impersonation, I also checked out the Chevelon Butte azimuth mark and a height of light next to the azimuth mark.
After leaving Chevelon Butte, I made my way back to Rim Road 300, then to Limestone Road. I could have driven all the way to the O'Haco LO, but I decided to stop and hike a mile or so the LO. The LO was enclosed in a locked chain link fence with barbwire on top of it, so I could not get to the LO. The LO was in a pine forest, so there were no views when standing on the ground.
I enjoyed the hike to Chevelon Butte -- there was some interesting stuff to see, and there were some nice views.
The tower at the O'Haco LO looked cool, but since you couldn't climb up on the tower and since there were no views on the ground, it wasn't very exciting being there.
The distance and elevation gain for the 2 hikes are below. Stats above are the sum of the 2.
Chevelon Butte: 7.7 miles with an AEG of 991 feet
O'Haco LO: 2.5 miles with an AEG of 230 feet
