I made a loop out of it, spending the first night in Las Cruces, a place I like and haven't been to in awhile. My go to lodging there is the Best Western. Quiet, off the beaten track, and a wonderful old property on Main Street. After checking in, I drove over to Mesilla to have dinner at at one of my favorite spots, Andele. After dinner, I drove back up to the roadside rest on the west entrance to town to get some photos of the recycled roadrunner, and keep my eye on thunderstorms which were encroaching from the northwest.
The next day was going to be a grind, driving up to get my green chiles at Socorro, then heading west back toward Arizona on US 60, with no concrete plan in place as to route or where I would spend night two. Normally, I don't like that kind of uncertainty on a trip. I usually have everything planned out and lined up before I leave (route and lodging). When I got to Socorro, I first went to get the chile roasted, then back to town to get ice to chill them down in the extra ice chest for the trip back home. Before leaving Socorro, I stopped at the old classic Capitol Bar (another favorite) to try one of their beers, now that they are brewing their own. A fellow walked in, sat near me, and and we ended up having a great hour long (at least) conversation about all sorts of things related to the area (he a 40+ year resident). I love it when that happens!
I wanted to take a side trip to Water Canyon in the Magdalena Mountains, a place I have been to before; just wanted to see it again and reflect on the good campouts I have enjoyed there (a memory lane nostalgia thing you know ). Next I stopped at Magdalena for some photos, then it was on west past the VLA to Datil. Most of the time I turn south there and head back to Arizona via Reserve, Glenwood, and Mule Creek, but since I was carrying extra cargo this trip, I wasn't going to sleep in the truck, so decided to head to Show Low and motel it. I was able to get a room at the Kiva Motel, where I have stayed before (inexpensive, clean, and just right).
Got an early start out of Show Low next morning for the fun drive to Globe via Salt River Canyon. From there it was on to Winkelman, Mammoth, and home (got there at about 11 AM). It was an uneventful drive the whole way, but I was surprised by the extent of the fire/flood damage along the highway south of Globe.
The first three photos in my set are from Las Cruces.
Interesting side note: I just found this report while looking at the website for the Magdalena District of Cibola National Forest. My name is mentioned in a photo credit for the historic tree blaze of the possible site of the murder and burial place of the Apache Kid in the San Mateo Mountains. I stopped in for a visit once at the Grassy Peak Fire Lookout and had a great conversation with the man on duty Richard Krause, who is a history buff. He told me about this place and I later went up with a hiker friend to photo document it for him. Guess it made its way to this report:
