A few months ago I was at Marble Canyon doing a couple different hikes. Afterwards I went over to check out Horseshoe Bend. I had never been and it is only a 45 minute drive from Marble Canyon. While there I got the bright idea to hike from Lee's Ferry at Marble Canyon to the end of the peninsula of Horseshoe Bend. It was too hot at that time to consider such a thing so I planned it for October. The kicker was to have someone come with me and while I hiked to the peninsula have them drive around to Horseshoe Bend and take my picture from across the river. Joe agreed to go along and he did just that.

We started out a little after 8AM and he joined me for the hike up the Spencer Trail. Then he went back down and drove around to Horseshoe Bend. At the same time I continued my hike across the rugged plateau and then out to the end. To my surprise I saw several small pools of water along the way from the recent rains. One was even roughly 50 feet across. Once at the end I could see the people on the other side looking out but they were barely visible. I couldn't even make out the color of their cloths. Basically just little figurines. Luckily there was cell service so I called Joe and eventually he could see me but I was also just a small dot. I hadn't really considered that fact that we would be a little over a half a mile apart. Everything is so grand in scale it is hard to imagine not being able to see someone over there but that was the case.

Boats and rafts passed by below and I shouted out "HELLO" really loud. Joe and everyone could hear it along with the following echo. Although the photo op. didn't turn out to be as good as I had hoped it was still a very cool experience.

I have two more hikes in the area on my bucket list that will have to be saved for another day...

1. Spencer to the Steps and 2. Echo Peak

Both look to be awesome but will require some planning and the right conditions.
