| partners | | September to early October is usually when it is best to go in and check out the apples. This hike just randomly popped into my head yesterday so I decided to text Joe and see if he would be interested in going sometime soon. It took a lot of convincing but after about 3 seconds of conversation he was a go.
The road it has it's spots but we never needed to put in in 4 wheel drive. A good high clearance vehicle should get you there if you decide to go in from the South.
I have done this hike from this side several times but I don't recall it ever being as overgrown as it was today in several spots. Thankfully I had pants on and they took the grunt of the catclaw and other brush. I still came out fairly scratched up and the pants look like they went through a war zone but nothing major. We had decent weather the whole hike and were looking forward to the apples. Once at the Ranch it was immediately evident that this is not a bumper crop year. Luckily there were plenty of trees with apples but it is just slim pickings.
I prefer the green ones and was able to have two reds and one green. All in all I am glad we went in but I would caution any who might go in from the South to be sure and bring pants this year. You will be glad you did. |
