After 1.03 miles from the east along FS 1356. a wide wash heads off to the north. Relatively smooth, flat and easy going trail proceeds for the next 1/2 mile in the direction of Government Wells, before encountering a drainage running from the southeast-to-northwest. Continue northwest along this drainage, following the trail as it dips in and out of the wash. We had a very enjoyable morning hike as the moderate overcast kept the sun from being an issue [no real shade all the way to Cottonwood Springs intersection]. There is evidence of equestrian traffic, but no motorized vehicles can take this course. Views of Dome Mtn. in the distance, and Flatiron to the south, provide ample navigational aides. There are numerous other trails that criscross the intended trail, so having a GPS map will come in handy until you finally reconnect with FS 1356 near the Tomahawk Mine.
