Hiked down the North Kaibab and up the South Kaibab (despite all the warnings that rookies should take BA- I would rather hike 3 miles less and it be much harder- plus I hear the views on the SK on much more beautiful than BA and not as crowded) I am STILL amazed- it truly is one of the most beautiful things you can experience in your life. There is so little you see when simply peering over the edge of the rim. Dunk our legs in the Colorado River near the boat ramp which was FREEZING but made all the difference for the hike up- my feet felt so much better after that. We hit the black bridge around 1pm so shade was intermittent, but was more than I was expecting given all the warnings about no shade! The South Kaibab was brutal, but I survived and did better than I thought I would thanks in part to being prepared with water/accelerade/and gu packs. It truly is a test of endurance, stamina, strength, and pure will. |
