Finally made it to the reservoir. The first time I drove up that rough-ass road, I made it to the mesa only to find that the lake was still closed after the Frye fire ... you'd think that there would have been a sign announcing this at the bottom of the road - but no!
The drive up was fun - took about 45 minutes from home to the mesa. Zero vehicles, zero people the whole time - literally the first vehicle/people I saw was when I was back down in the flats, almost back to the pavement ... I keep getting lucky like that.
Decent amount of birds during my short walk around the lake - lots of Yellow Warblers, lots of Bell's Vireo, some Hooded Orioles, Ash-throated Flycatchers and one American Robin. And a bunch of pretty happy-looking cows on the mesa. There is an unpleasant cow smell around the little beaches between the dam and the waterfall. And of course a disgusting amount of trash and unpleasant human smell around the small parking/camping area.
The waterfall was nice - very shallow pool at the bottom currently, and the water is ice cold as expected.
Only crazy people would walk across that dam! There is a good path all the way around, and it takes like ten minutes. Or swim across. Not. The. Dam. I might consider descending those crazy stairs, however ... that would be scary enough. And I would dearly LOVE to run S'mores someday!
