I had never hiked or camped anywhere along 93 before, just had driven the highway. Stupidly, I wore Chacos instead of hiking shoes. I survived. When we reached the pool we sat in it, which felt nice.
At the mouth of Kaiser Canyon where it runs into Burro Creek we met a Girl Troop of BSA Scouts, all young teens. (My 14-year-old granddaughter is in one of these troops, and it's great to see they are starting to become popular.) They had backpacked down and had a camp set up there.
This trip had started in Flagstaff, with gravel bikes loaded on the car, and all our touring kit, plus a seat for the daughter, we drove down to camp along FR 95 on the Mogollon Rim on Thursday night. We had planned a loop ride, starting on FR 95. But that was not to be, due to the weather. (I will post a little hike we did there also, just for the record.) It was cold and windy. I kept saying, "There's snow in the forecast," but my friend was dubious. When we got up on Friday morning it was 38 degrees. We decided to cancel the bike trip, and just do a car camping trip. We did a little hike to Barbershop Spring, then headed downhill in search of warmth and less wind. We finally found it at Burro Creek. |
