| no partners | | I started this hike at the Lava Flow North Trailhead in Vekol Valley, south of I-8.
BENCH Benchmark (1936) is on a no-name mountain, just west of Table Top Mountain, in the Table Top Wilderness.
I actually portray this no-name mountain as a small mountain range, as I had to go up & down at least 6 high, rocky points (peaks ?) on its ridgeline, to get to the last and highest peak that Bench BM was placed in 1936. Some other 'bumps' on the ridgeline could be bypassed, but not many.
This hike was from one end of this mountain 'range' to the other, and there are no trails.
It's the kind of 'off-trail' hike that forces a hiker to make decisions every 50 to 100 feet, in order to be efficient and safe.
Actually, that's a good thing, and it really tests your decision-making skills.
Bench BM has double duty - As it is also Table BM's azimuth mark.
After I was done with photos of Bench BM, and done measuring some distances, I left the mountain by going straight down toward the W/SW from the benchmark to the desert floor.
Once on the desert floor, I slogged along, crossing through numerous drainages back to my TH.
That part got a bit tedious.
All in all a very good hike in a "not-so-far-away" area. |
