I started out at a temp of 28 degrees and ended in the high 40s.
Walker Mountain is comprised of two distinct peaks - Each peak has a benchmark, sort of.
One peak at 5,885 FT, has a benchmark disk and the other, higher peak, (5,928 ft) does not. The higher peak itself is the Benchmark. I hiked up both peaks.
I started on a dirt road that needs 4WD & high clearance. The first part of the hike up to the first peak starts as a gradual incline then a medium grade, followed by "HMMM Why do I keep going 3 feet forward and 1 foot back"??
Mr & Mrs Scree assisted my last portion of 'up-the-mountain'.
Throw in a false summit, low ground hugging prickly pear, catclaw, plus that scree - all made for slow going.
A couple vertical walls near the top finished off the up-hike to the 'Walker BM' peak.
The first thing I saw at the high-point of peak #1, was a 4 foot high cairn, made of toaster oven to microwave size boulders. My thought was, if I have to 'de-boulder' that pyramid, I'll break my back putting it up again.
I looked at the datasheet, located the only reference mark set in place, and measured.
Lucky me - The Walker Benchmark disk, set in 1930, was in it's own little boulder nearby. Whew !!
The down climb from the 1st peak toward the 2nd peak was straight forward, and the up climb was also. Even though the second peak is the highest of the two peaks, the up climb was less, due to a high saddle.
This 2nd peak has no benchmark datasheet available online, nor does it have a benchmark disk either (not that I could locate anyway). I searched the entire little top and failed to find a disk.
That 2nd peak has a cairn also, but it's much smaller. I de-rocked the cairn, and found just dirt, then bedrock, but no disk.
Although some maps display LAVA as a benchmark name on the 2nd peak, I assume the 'actual peak' is the LAVA BM.
Once done with "things in the ground", I hiked back to my trailhead.
I sidestepped the first peak on its north side, then caught my up-track, & loosely followed it down that steep portion It was a slow scree-filled descent.
All in all - A nice hike in a remote area. |
