| no partners | | It's been a while. My brother wanted to go somewhere new, and we were bringing two newbies with us, so he wanted an in-season, low-difficulty hike. I made my first mistake as I used Google Maps to navigate to the trailhead. It took us on a very gnarly offshoot forest service road, but fortunately my 4x4 could handle it. Lots of fun mud puddles to cross, though.
We intended to hike about 6 miles in, but we only ended up making it 2 miles. Route finding proved difficult, and my companions were squirrelly on the creek crossings.
Our first day, it rained a good deal. I was successful in getting a campfire started, though. We encountered ~4 established campsites in the first 1.5 miles following the creek. Only one appeared to have been used recently, and there was some half-burned trash left behind.
Our second day didn't have rain, and we gave ourselves more time to set up camp and enjoy a swimming area in the creek.
On the third day, we hiked out.
It was disappointing to not go as far as we had intended, but it was a win for the newbies. A hike like this with little elevation gain and plenty of water was an OK way to introduce them to the wilderness. |
