Since I would need a number of trips to the car back-and-forth across Webber Creek, even after a rough night (even with my extra sleeping gear it's definitely not ideal) I was up and out of my tent shortly after 4 am in a decidedly chilly 44° (1/4?) moonlight and starting to pack up.
After breakfast Tracey left the items she wouldn't need for the day hike at the car and set off for Pine while I began the drive to the Pine TH. With the shorter drive I was on-the-trail within an hour of Tracey's start.
Due to the change in plan not able to drive up FR 1138 yesterday, we were both a bit in-the-dark as to how long a hike Tracey had. She had thought 'only 6 miles to Pine' (which it WOULD have been if we'd camped on FR 1138) so with me thinking the same thing I figured I'd have maybe a 60 to 90-minute hike before meeting up with Tracey.
But the moment I realized Tracey should have more two miles MORE than the only 6 miles and I began reworking the time/distance problem it had me reeling. Since I began an hour later than her, and her pace yesterday was over 2 mph, if she didn't slow down today and/or if I didn't speed up I'd have another short hike with Tracey.
So I got to huffing-and-puffing and picked up the pace big-time so in the end I got to hike an extra half-mile with her today than yesterday, whoopee!
And today's joint hike was the most enjoyable part of the trip, we could not have asked for better hiking conditions, with the trail in absolutely fabulous shape and the perfect hiking weather. |
