Steady climb for the 3 miles of the Derrick Trail and the continuing for the next mile along the Highline Trail to the Promontory Trail. The Promontory is a steep climb up to the rim. I told Ginny we weren’t going to do that (much to her disappointment). The highline to Horton Creek from here is a little downhill and more uphill before really going downhill to the east Fork of Horton Creek. East Fork Horton was dry and we took a break there. Just one more small hill to go over to get to Horton Creek. I had completely forgotten about Horton Spring but once I got to the creek crossing I suddenly remembered the spring, Don’t know how I could forget about the spring, such a cool place. Every bit of water in Horton Creek comes gushing out of the ground there. From Horton Spring we headed down the Horton Creek Trail to our start point. Made a couple of side trips along Horton Creek where the falls are. Horton Creek was running pretty good until just before the end of the trail where it disappeared under ground again. |
