Five years later my second attempt going for the entire Highline Trail in one day only to get defeated once again.
Red flag winds, high creek crossings, snowpack segments and the aftermath of a harsh winter of erosion along with heavy amounts of dead and down along the trail definitely played factors in my success but above all the trail simply kicked my butt.
A nasty mile segment of snowpack just before the East Fork of Horton got the Altra’s nice and soggy which would lead to issues later even with extra socks and moleskin.
Christopher and Tonto Creek were true unavoidable knee deep crossing where shoes and socks needed to be removed which burnt up good chunks of time drying and lacing back up.
After having my only true break at the Hatchery I made the mistake of not stopping for the next 5-6 hours or so trying to push through the worst of the trail in my opinion, the “Highline Fire” burn scar segment from Roberts Mesa to Dude Creek.
Winds were absolutely howling and I should have taken more consideration to the red flag warnings I saw days prior but my stubbornness of trying to finish it before my birthday got the best of me as that non stop wind blown section drained me physically and mentally.
It was tough to call it quits at Washington Park as the finish line seemed so close but in reality it was still a big stretch I wouldn’t have completed that night.
Learned a lot from this experience and have now hiked every step of this trail between the two attempts and for the third and final attempt I’m not going to wait another 5 years.
A midnight start and not doing it solo will be the big changes to hopefully finish this mighty trail in one day once and for all! |
