The temps went up 10 degrees yesterday, and forecast for 10 more today. This caused us to reconsider or original options and scrap them completely. We camped a mile or two from Wire Pass and arrived at the trailhead early enough in the morning to be ahead of any crowds.
Not sure how much water we would encounter in the slot, we were happy to find it to be essentially dry. In fact, after a few miles we began to lament that we hadn't set up a shuttle at White House. I felt confident that we could find a ride back if we pushed on, but none of us had planned for that and were unprepared with food or water. We could filter just before the Paria, but we're not three JJs and more than an apple is needed on a 19 mile hike, so we turned around somewhere around 6 miles in.
The return presented all new lighting and different views. As expected the last 2 miles or so became a bit more touristy than my preference. The exposed wash walk to Wire Pass was hot. We had definitely made the right decision to spend a day in the gulch today!
Not sure why ATB isn't valid at Wire Pass. It's $6 per person to hike here. There's a parking lot and a bathroom, no more. The fee probably helps pay rangers to help control people poaching the wave?
With reports of recent grading on House Rock we headed south. This was a terrible decision as the reports were inaccurate. Despite the recent flu, we spotted 7 happy condors on Navajo Bridge before heading back to the valley capping off a great week in the beehive state. |
