Over the years I've visited Sycamore Canyon a handful of times. The first was in 2014, and the most recent just this past weekend. There have been fires and floods over the years, and the changes have been profound. This year there were almost no spots where getting wet above the knees was even possible despite a good seasonal flow. I thought that perhaps the impressive floods this winter would have cleared out some of the post-fire sediment. That is not the case. In fact, it makes me wonder if the pools that existed a decade ago will ever get scoured out again.

In comparing photos, the level of sediment now frequently fills the canyon to a higher level than water did in 2014 when the pools were so deep that swimming was necessary to get through.

It's an interesting comparison, so I figured I would share. Who knows how this canyon will be shaped over the next decade?
