| no partners | | I stayed at Barfoot campground the night before, got up early and decided to head down the mountain a bit to Onion saddle. From here, I thought I may be able to attempt to hike Onion peak and Shaw peak. Since it was so HOT, and this was my 4th day of hiking, I decided to skip Shaw peak since it would have been an 8 mile roundtrip with a lot of sun.
From Onion saddle, I started hiking up FS 4854. After about 0.46 miles I saw a narrow entrance on the right side of the road that hikers can walk-through but keep cattle out. I crossed through and picked up a trail that was fairly easy to follow, but probably hasn't been maintained in a while. I hiked for a total of 0.78 miles to get to the high point just West of Onion peak. There was a fence line and another primitive narrow entrance. I decided to cross through the entrance and then travel East toward Onion peak. There was a lot of brush to go around, but when I looked carefully there was always a descent way to proceed, perhaps a use trail from other hikers, although faint. Near much of the ascent, especially the final half, I was able to follow the fence line. When the brush got too thick near the fence, I was able to walk around it.
At the peak, there were some nice views of Cochise Head which I hiked the previous Friday. I also found a registry which I signed. Then, I decided that it was too hot to continue to Shaw peak, so I headed back down to Onion saddle. I'll hike Shaw peak another time when it's cooler or with more cloud cover.
Total AEG = 460 feet.
