I drove 3.5 miles from pavement to get to the TH. The road was mostly good, but there were some rough places and I'd recommend a high clearance 4WD vehicle for the drive; but perhaps an aggressive subi driver could make it.
From my parking spot, I went east across open country for about 3/4 mile to get me to a drainage that I got into and followed for about a mile. From there I went up some steep slopes to a ridge just NW of the peak. While the slopes were steep, the footing was good so it was not a bad ascent. There were some large boulders around the summit, and in looking at it from below I wasn't 100% certain that this would go. However, as I got closer I found an easy route up from the NW side of the summit -- at worst I'd call it class 2-.
There were nice views at the summit, and I enjoyed being up there. There was snow on Mount Tipton and the Hualapais. I went back more-or-less the way that I came, although on the descent I took advantage of being at an elevated position to look down and pick a good route down to the drainage.
Synopsis
This is a pretty area with some interesting geology, so I enjoyed the hike. There were lots of joshua trees along the way, so that was a bonus. The footing was good on the steep slopes, which made for a good ascent and descent. This was a fun hike -- there was enough route finding, decision making, and rock scrambling to keep you on your toes and make things interesting. |
