This summit is in the Coronado National Forest in a remote and isolated area of SW New Mexico. I drove 45 miles south of the metropolis of Animas, with the last 21 miles being on a well graded dirt road. In fact, the dirt road was better than the paved portion from Animas. The Guadalupe Mountains are partly in Arizona and partly in New Mexico.
There was a trail for a half mile or so, but the rest was going mostly through open country. There was a good bit of brush, with manzanita being the worst culprit. However, I was able to avoid almost all of the brushy stuff, so I'd hardly call this a bushwhack. I avoided some manzanita by hiking in a drainage for a bit, and then I was able to hike on grassy areas on other parts of the hike.
It was a very windy day though, which was kind of a pain; but that happens sometimes.
I located the benchmark and both reference marks at the summit. All were stamped "Cloverdale 1938".
The summit area was nice with some unobstructed 360 degree views, but it was too windy today to stay up there too long.
I thought that this was an enjoyable hike, but it is not close to anywhere or anything, so you'll have to travel a bit to get there. |
