| no partners | | This was a hike to the summit of Peak 3651, the highpoint of the Hell's Canyon Wilderness.
I drove in on Castle Hot Springs Road for a good ways, and then made a right turn onto Cedar Basin Road. Cedar Basin Road was in better shape than I thought it would be, although it is still a 4WD road. I drove in about 1.3 miles and parked at Garfias Wash. I could have driven further, but the hike was fairly short so I was fine with doing a bit of road walking.
I walked on the road until I got to Horse Creek Tank, where I left the road and headed up to the peak from the northwest. I followed some cattle trails down to a drainage, and then just headed uphill on some slopes. It got fairly brushy as I gained elevation, but the brush wasn't as nasty as it is on some hikes -- there was a lot of jojoba, which isn't too bad to go through.
The slopes were a bit steep and there was some loose rock in places, but it wasn't too bad. There was a bit of scrambling, but nothing more than fairly easy class 2.
There were nice views at the summit, especially to Lake Pleasant to the east.
Until I started to do this triplog, I was not aware that there was a guide on HAZ for this peak. In preparing for the hike I had done a search for "Peak 3651", but nothing came up since the name on HAZ includes a comma, i.e., the entry is "Peak 3,651". The standard peak naming convention omits the comma, but next time that I do a search on HAZ I will also try a search that includes a comma.
I got rained on a bit on the last part of the hike, but at least there was no hail and no flash floods this time, so things are trending in the right direction!

Wildflowers Observation Light It was a toss-up between "light" and "moderate" for the wildflower description, so I flipped a coin and "light" came out on top. There are lots of fiddlenecks out there, along with some of the others that I have been seeing this spring. |
