Doing these trails together would be a natural combo. I started from the Ice Box Canyon TH again. (I realized that when I got to the end of SMYC, that it makes more sense to start from the Willow Spring/Lost Canyon TH. Not a huge deal. Starting at ice box adds about .5 miles).
Got on the trail around 6:30. Went in on the Ice Box for .25 miles and then took the SMYC to the north. The trail gained a little elevation climbing a small ridge. As I hiked this, the vegetation went from sparse to abundant with the addition of juniper and pines. From the ridge the trail dropped down, using a series of natural stone steps and graded declines. It bottomed out crossing a wash and then veered west going behind a small knoll. Kind of a nice little pocket area, removed from the rest of the canyon. Climbed the saddle between the knoll and Rainbow Mountain and was treated to a nice view as Red Rock Canyon began to narrow between two mountains. The trail eventually worked its way down to the canyon floor crossing a large trail wash. The SMYC ended when it junctured with the Lost Creek Trail. Took Lost Creek .05 miles to the it’s TH. Returned the way I came. Nice easy trail. More scenic than I anticipated. No wildlife. Had the trails to myself. |
