| no partners | | First day of a three day “hikation”. Did a quick hike in Tucson (Sarasota Trail at Tucson Mt) then drove on to Parker Canyon Lake. Darrell and I were going to car camp at the lake for a few days while doing the AZ Trail. I got there around 10am on Thursday and was pleasantly surprised to find the campground practically empty. Chose the shadiest spot (FYI. If you have an America the Beautiful card you save 10 dollars a night. Ten dollars a night rather than twenty. Of course, I forgot mine at home ). Once situated I decided to hike the lake.
Hiked down from my campground and went CCW. The lake has quite a few jagged arms, especially on the northeast side. The water levels being down compared to previous years meant that the lake wasn’t as jagged as when the trail was made. This made staying “on trail” more challenging on these diminished inlets. Lot of use trails cut across prematurely. I did pretty well, except near the end on the south end of the lake. I had to back track a little to capture that segment. A good general principle is to stay wide on the inlets. There were several benches along the way and some old maintenance/forestry structures (fenced off) that were hidden in areas, where the inlets had recessed from. In spots, the trail was slightly elevated above the lake, but mainly was a shore line trail. Near the spillway I deviated from the trail for a short time following a use trail, but it became more faint as I followed it and seemed to be heading away from the lake. On the way back I stopped at the general store (open 8-5, 7 days a week for the season) got some drinks and sat at a table for a bit, enjoying the solitude and the breeze coming off the lake.
Saw 3 boats on the lake and about 8 people fishing on the shoreline. Encountered 1 other couple hiking the lake. Wildlife included a deer, some squirrels, cranes and egrets. Fish were biting. I saw a fisherman and a crane “dealing” with their “catches”. |
