| no partners | | Belated post. Going through my phone and I realized that I missed posting this hike. I did this hike back in May, exploring the Wet Beaver area. I’ve only been back in this area once and that was close to 20 years ago.
Early morning hike. Started from the Bruce Brockett TH around 5am. I took the Brockett Trail over to the Bell Trail. The Brockett Trail is a relatively short trail (.9 miles) that was put in to help with the congestion of the Bell Trail. Not a problem today, didn’t see anyone while I was out there. Followed the Bell for a little over a mile to the White Mesa. Enjoyed a few glimpses of water along the way. It’s quite the transition going from the Bell, a 5 foot wide path to the, to the White Mesa, a seldom used single path. The trail climbs steadily going along the northern slope of a canyon. I thought there might be some switchbacking, but the trail follows the canyon as it turns east. You get some decent looks at the opposite canyon wall, but the slope you are hiking on is expansive so there no “drop offs” that allow for a good look at the canyon below. The trail is easy to follow for the first mile until it passes through a gate. This is near the top of the mesa and the trail seems to fade into the scrub. I wandered around the top briefly, but never got a good vantage point to see the surrounding area. With some more knowledge of the area might consider doing a loop with the Apache Maid Trail. Returned the way I came.
It was nice doing this trail and checking out a new area. Seems like most of the hikes in the area are days hikes (10+ miles). The trails that I followed today were solid, but some of the longer hikes I might to download the route just in case. Had the trails to myself. No wildlife. |
