I was not intending to visit this highpoint, but I was driving to Albuquerque to spend the night and was ahead of schedule. That being the case, I pulled off of I-40, did some quick research on nearby county highpoints, and decided to head to Gray County.
I drove in from the north on CR 1, and parked at the junction of CR 1 and CR L. The highpoint is in the NE quadrant of the junction, not far from the road. The area is very flat and it is hard to discern where the highpoint is, so I walked around a bit and called it good.
The most interesting thing on my stroll was seeing a bull snake.
This was the last peak on my peakbagging road trip, which included peaks in 8 states: NM, TX, OK, AR, TN, NC, KY, and VA. Stats on the trip are below.
Miles Driven: 4,956
State highpoints: 1
County highpoints: 29
P1K peaks: 12
P2K peaks: 3
The only hikes where I saw another hiker were House Mountain in Tennessee and Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. |
